Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park

  • With the advancement of technology in the 20th century, interest sparked in biotech research

  • With the deciphering of the double-helix in 1953, in 1976 two men named Robert Swanson (venture capitalist) and Herbert Boyer (biochemist) founded the first multimillion dollar company in molecular genetics called Genetech

  • Another company called International Genetic Technologies (Ingen) was involved in a scandal involving the death of a handful of people

  • Non-signatories of a non-disclosure agreement are willing to tell the tale of what transpired on an island west of Costa Rica

  • There have been sightings and incidents of a strange lizard on the west coast of Costa Rica

  • According to the description of an 8-year old girl named Tina who was bitten, professionals think it is a basiliscus amoratus (lizards that can run on water on hind legs)

  • A tested flesh sample determined the unknown lizard had no pathogens

  • Another incident occurs when the lizards attack and kill an infant

  • In the mid-80s, Alan Grant was approached by Ingen to be a consultant and received 12K for it

  • He learns from an Environmental Protection Agent that the Hammond Foundation who is funding his paleontology work leased a Costa Rican island called Isla Nublar

  • Donald Gennaro, a lawyer representing Ingen, called him and asked for dietary info of which Alan could not provide because he is strictly a paleontologist

  • Gennaro offers 50K to support Grant’s work for two years. They settle for 12. The Hammond Foundation, owned by John Hammond, then began to fund Grant’s work. Hammond is just a dinosaur enthusiast to Grant

  • The EPA is concerned why Hammond is stockpiling amber. They show Grant that the check he received for 12K from Gennaro/Ingen is connected to Nublar which connects to Hammond. They suspect Hammond of illegal activities

  • He also informs Grant that Hammond has invested in Crays and Hoods (3 supercomputers and 24 gene sequencers) sent to Nublar. Why is such sophisticated and advanced tech needed for a remote island?

  • Lewis Dodgson of Biosyn (Ingen’s competitor) experimented with rabies and even had it on a commercial flight

  • Gennaro told Grant he wanted the information for a museum exhibit but the EPA suspects otherwise

  • A technician named Alice Levin sends Grant a fax and when he looks at it, recognizes the illustration on it as a procompsognathus and is in disbelief

  • Hammond calls Grant about the agent sniffing around

  • He tells Grant about Nublar and insists he take a weekend to visit. He also invited Dr. Ellie Sattler as he needs a paleobotanist

  • Dodgson is known for industrial espionage against Ingen

  • He reveals that Ingen is planning to create a zoo of sorts for dinosaurs and they can patent them. He plans corporate espionage.

  • He meets with a man and gives him a can of shaving cream which can store 15 vials of embryos inside for $1.5 mil

  • Grant, Sattler, Gennaro, and Hammond convene with a mathematician named Ian Malcolm

  • Malcolm claims the island will fail due to chaos theory or unpredictable factors- Hammond’s zoo is a simple system but his animals will show unpredictability

  • They are taken to Hammond’s island, Isla Nubar. Once there, they witness a dinosaur, a sauropod

  • Hammond welcomes them to his facility- Jurassic Park

  • Grant fears that speculative and deductive paleontology is dead with dinosaur cloning now realized

  • Grant and Sattler realize the facility is built like a fortress of which they wonder why

  • Two of Hammond’s grandchildren arrive- Lex and Tim Murphy (Tex)

  • The group gets the tour of the facility

  • Ed Regis the public relations manager introduces the group to Henry Wu, the chief geneticist.

  • He explains that while they can extract 20% of DNA from fossils by grinding bones and extracting proteins, their main method is using fossilized amber with mosquitoes trapped inside which sucked dinosaur blood

  • The group is taken into the Hatchery and witness a six-week old velociraptor

  • Wu explains they control breeding by making the dinosaurs sterile through X-ray radiation making them all female

  • Malcolm has concerns that the wrong amount of radiation dosage may be distributed and how they know the dinosaurs are female. Wu answers that they make them that way by controlling their chromosomes

  • Wu made the procompys to deal with dinosaur waste which they eat. There are 50 of them

  • Malcolm asks what if one was to get off the island which Wu assures they cannot because of inventory checks and they cannot leave the island because of lysine dependency which exists outside and is only supplied by pills to keep them alive

  • The group is told about the 8 Velociraptors and head to the pen where they are

  • They are aggressively approached by 3 raptors who are held back by an electric fence

  • Malcolm deduces that like modern man-eaters such as lions, tigers, and bears (oh my), predators wouldn’t know that man is an easy target unless they’ve so before

  • Grant confirms this as a frightening truth is realized

  • Grant is troubled by Mr. Arnold’s (head engineer) admission that the animals are regularly patched up like software because they are creations

  • The tour begins. The first dinosaur on it is othnielia/nanosaurus, a small hypsilophodont/bipedal carnivore. Next are Dilophosaurus and Triceratops

  • The group witnesses an adult T-rex eat a goat

  • They stop by a sick Stegosaurus (Triceratops in the movie) which mistakenly swallowed West Indian lilac berries when swallowing gizzard stones which help digest tough vegetation

  • Malcolm explains to Gennaro that chaos theory dictates that just like mankind thought that computers could predict and control weather, so too does this park think it can predict and control dinosaurs but on the contrary

  • Grant finds a Velociraptor egg, disproving that the dinosaurs can’t breed

  • Malcolm and Grant tell Arnold to check his computer who sees that the number of expected dinosaurs went up from 238 to 292. Hammond blames Wu for this mistake but Wu doesn’t understand how it’s possible

  • Grant deduces there are 7 nests among the different species and each one has 7-12 hatchlings

  • Grant suspects that frog DNA was used to make the dinosaur gene and tells Wu to check

  • The power goes out during a rainstorm and the two land cruisers become stationary near the tyrannosaur paddock. A complete blackout

  • Dennis Nedry is the man who met with Dodgson. Ingen would not pay him extra for adding extra security features so he installed a bug

  • He was blackmailed with defamation when he refused the job so he took Dodgson’s offer

  • He steals fertilization embryos for each species and puts them in the can

  • Arnold and Muldoon (JP’s game warden) realize that Nedry turned off the security system and Muldoon sets out to retrieve the passengers since the electric fences are down and the animals could get out as well as someone deciding to leave the cruisers and possibly being left behind

  • Muldoon can’t find the Jeep because Nedry took it to the east dock where the boat that travels between the island and the mainland docks

  • The T-rex appears and its presence and roar is enough to make Ed Regis urinate

  • He flees the car. Lex exclaims “he left us!”. In the film, it is Gennaro who abandons them

  • Tim realizes that the T-rex is holding onto the fence without being electrified. It breaks the fence and steps out

  • Grant radios to Tex not to move or make sound

  • T-rex attacks Tex’s car and Lex is heard screaming

  • Malcolm and Grant think it got her but they cannot be certain

  • Malcolm runs and Grant watches as T-rex flings him in the air like a rag doll. Grant gets out and stands motionless in fear but it does nothing

  • Grant realizes it can’t see him but knows he’s there. T-rex tries to scare him but Grant doesn’t move

  • T-rex hits the land cruiser which makes Grant go flying and crashing back to the ground knocking him unconscious

  • Nedry takes a wrong turn and gets out of the jeep

  • He’s attacked by a dinosaur that blinds him with acid spit, eviscerates him, and takes his skull into its jaws

  • Tim is alone and gets out of the cruiser that fell into a tree

  • While getting out of the cruiser, it falls down and breaks through branches nearly crushing him

  • He uses night goggles to find his way back to the road. He does not find Malcolm or Grant

  • Wu checks the computers for DNA and sees rana which is frog DNA.

  • Wu knows internally that Grant is right about the breeding but is not sure how

  • Tim finds Lex and Grant finds them both

  • Regis is alive but feels shame

  • He hears Lex for a bit but then doesn’t. He makes his way back to camp

  • He’s attacked, killed, and eaten by the juvenile T-rex whom Grant and Tex witness from the top of the hill

  • Muldoon and Gennaro find Regis’ leg

  • Muldoon finds the jeep that Tim was in and deduces he’s alive because he took a watch off which he had time to do. They start looking for him

  • They find Malcolm, badly injured and wheezing and take him back

  • Wu and Arnold discover that Nedry off the security systems and that someone went into the freezer where the embryos are stored

  • Muldoon returns with Malcolm and Regis’ leg and tells Sattler there was an attack and Grant is still in the park with Tex

  • Tex and Grant find a maintenance building with bales of hay and sleep on them

  • Arnold finds the correct code to restore the power. It’s 9:30pm

  • Malcolm is being tended to by Harding and Sattler

  • Harding leaves to help Muldoon herd the animals and leaves Malcolm with Sattler and Gennaro

  • T-rex wanders into the sauropod paddock where Grant and the kids are (maintenance building)

  • Arnold has to turn off the safety systems to try and get the phones back online

  • T-rex chases hadrosaurs which stampede around Grant and kids. In the film they are Gallimimus

  • Motion sensors are back on and Arnold sees the commotion. He wants Muldoon to check it out

  • Grant and Tex find a tree to sleep in. In the morning they are surrounded by maiasauri (in the film it is brachiosauri)

  • They take a raft near the maintenance building and must sneak past a sleeping Rex

  • The Rex is awakened by sneeze and chases them in the water

  • The juvie Rex shows up and Rex defends its kill and chases little Rex off

  • Muldoon and Gennaro find Nedry’s corpse

  • Grant and Tex continue down the river and reacy an aviary housing cearadactyls. They are attacked. This was adapted for JP 3

  • They continue on the raft and Rex tries to attack them. They pass two dilophosauri

  • Muldoon and Gennaro try and tranq Rex but fail twice

  • Grant and Tex almost fall into Rex’s clutches at the bottom of a waterfall

  • They take a path that goes back around to the waterfall, hiding among the plants and manage to get behind the waterfall

  • They find a storage unit. Grant opens a door which leads down a flight of stairs to a stored car and a lone juvenile 2ft Velociraptor

  • Tex is almost taken by the T-rex when it attacks behind the waterfall. Tim is almost taken as the muscular tongue is too much for him to overpower

  • For some unknown reason it relents and lets go as its mouth closes on the tongue making it bleed then it leaves. Tex sees that it was tranquilized

  • Auxiliary power goes out which the park was running on instead of main power

  • The waterfall stops

  • Since aux power is not enough to power the electrified fences it means the raptors escaped

  • Dr. Arnold finds himself surrounded by them at the maintenance shed where he went to turn on the main power

  • Gennaro and Muldoon kill one and blow it to pieces. The remaining 7 raptors chase them

  • While being tended to, Malcolm explains that true power must be attained with time and discipline- neither of which Hammond did. He didn’t take the time to understand the product he packaged and patented and called it his

  • Muldoon gets stuck in a pipe with 3 or 4 raptors surrounding him

  • Arnold walks down a pitch black staircase in the maintenance shed with a raptor tailing him

  • The raptor jumps down to his landing and attacks him as he screams

  • Gennaro goes in next after Arnold doesn’t return. He also gets attacked

  • Malcolm philosophizes that scientific discoveries meant being able to understand and control scientific properties but that will never be true because nature is unpredictable. He says change is certain of which the result is unknown until it happens

  • Grant drives himself and Tex through a tunnel that leads to the visitor centre

  • They have the young raptor

  • Grant manages to get in contact with Sattler who is at the lodge with Malcolm, Wu, and Hammond

  • A few raptors are attempting to get inside through a skylight

  • Everyone agrees for Sattler to act as bait and distract the raptors while Grant attempts to get the power back. Lex and Tim are left in the cafeteria

  • The same raptor that attacked Arnold and Gennaro is now in the kitchen and goes after Tex. Tim manages to lock it in a walk-in freezer

  • Grant finds Gennaro and helps him out

  • A raptor gets Wu and eviscerates him as it eats his intestines while still alive

  • In the visitor centre, Tex attempts but fails to activate the main grid on the computer in the control room before the raptors get in

  • The raptors jump onto the 2nd floor where Tex who are forced to run

  • They run and hide and find a baby raptor in the nursery that is cannibalized when Tex throws it at two adults as a distraction, not expecting it to be eaten

  • They run into the DNA-extraction lab. They are found by Grant and Gennaro.

  • Grant manages to take down 3 raptors by injecting poison into eggs which the raptors ingest. They foam at the mouth and die slowly

  • Tim manages to get the park functioning again and the electricity running thereby shocking the raptors attempting to get into the lodge

  • Gennaro makes a call to the boat that is heading towards the town of Puntaneras and tells it to head back to the island

  • An ecosystem is created as the dinosaurs mix and create an equilibrium

  • Grant tells Gennaro that this island that he invested in is now a mess and must be cleaned up

  • They have to find as many raptor nests and destroy them

  • They deduce that that they are hidden in the southern volcanic pits since that is raptor territory

  • On the way, Grant explains about amphibian DNA and how western African frogs can change their sex from female to male. That’s his theory for the dinosaur breeding

  • Hammond is nervous about Malcolm dying and paradoxically doesn’t want him to die (he dislikes him) because if he does it’ll prove Malcolm absolutely right about everything. Malcolm’s death would be the final sign of admonishment and chastisement to Hammond

  • Hammond leaves and introspects. If Gennaro decides to shut the park down, he has more embryos in California at InGen

  • He blames Wu for the downfall since he engineered the dinosaurs

  • He hears a roar of a T-rex which startles him and tumbles down a hill. He realizes it’s a recording from the control room where Tex is

  • Grant, Sattler, and Gennaro climb down into a cave with 30 raptors. 3 nests with 3 sets of parents along with infants and juveniles

  • As Hammond is climbing up the hill, he’s attacked by Compies

  • They poison him through biting making him feel relaxed

  • One takes a bite of his neck. This is Dieter’s fate in The Lost World film

  • The raptors head off all together out of the cave through a tunnel and all mysteriously stand in 3 vertical lines like ducklings following their parent, staring out at the Pacific

  • Grant realizes they want to migrate

  • He did not have to use gas grenades on them in the cave

  • A helicopter arrives and picks up Gennaro, Grant, and Sattler.

  • Muldoon is on another helicopter with tex. He reveals that Malcolm did not make it and that the compies got Hammond

  • The island is bombed

  • Everyone is taken to San Jose, Costa Rica

  • A man named Marty Guttierez, the same man who found the first specimens of the compies, tells Grant that animals have been observed going into the northern mountainous jungle region of Ismaloya

  • Guttierez tells Grant that he isn’t going anywhere as he smiles
